The 2016 U.S. Open returns to historic Oakmont Country Club in western Pennsylvania for the ninth time, the most of any venue. A course that has seen champions such as Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Ernie Els will test the players with its “church pew” bunkers and difficult greens once again. DATES: The 2016 U.S. Open will be played June 16-19, 2016. The event is part of a compressed PGA Tour summer schedule in 2016, making way for the Olympic golf tournament in Rio de Janeiro in mid-August.

COMPETITION: The U.S. Open is a 72-hole stroke-play tournament. If two or more players are tied after the regulation 72 holes, there will be a full 18-hole playoff the following day (Monday). If a tie exists after that fifth round, then the playoff continues as sudden-death on the 91st hole, which has occurred three times since the rule was implemented (1990, 1994, 2008).

HOST VENUE: Founded in 1903 by industrialist Henry Clay Fownes, Oakmont Country Club was the first golf course in the United States to be recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Oakmont has previously hosted 15 USGA championships, including five U.S. Amateurs, three PGA Championships, two U.S. Women’s Opens, and eight U.S. Opens (1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994 and 2007). This accounts for the most major championships and the most U.S. Opens of any American club.
