Watch 201 UFC Live 2016

Woodley (15-3) hasn’t fought since a split decision win vs. an overweight and ill Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183. The former Strikeforce welterweight title challenger was scheduled to face Johny Hendricks at UFC 192, but Hendricks’ fight week hospitalization led to the cancellation of the fight, and Dana White effectively giving Woodley the next title shot. Woodley’s biggest wins are a knockout of Dong Hyun Kim, an injury TKO vs. Carlos Condit, and a vicious one-punch KO of Josh Koscheck. He’ll be coming off an 18 month layoff when he enters the cage against Lawler.

WOODLEY VS. LAWLER

Lawler (27-10, 1 NC) is coming off a thrilling split decision win over Carlos Condit atUFC 195 in January. As we near the halfway point of 2016, it holds up as one of the best fights of the year. His previous title defense was an all-time classic vs. Rory MacDonaldat UFC 189, a fight which he won by 5th round TKO while behind on the scorecards. The 34-year-old’s incredible career resurgence has seen him win an incredible 8 of his 9 fights since returning to the UFC via Strikeforce in 2013.

Lawler beat Johny Hendricks by split decision to win the title at UFC 181. He’s since defended the title twice. At UFC 189, the 34-year-old American Top Team fighter defeated Rory MacDonald via fifth-round TKO in a “Fight of the Year” candidate. At UFC 195 in January, heearned a split-decision win over Carlos Condit.

Woodley, meanwhile, has been on the sideline since a split-decision win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183, a fight for which Gastelum badly missed weight. Woodley, a 34-year-old former standout NCAA Division I wrestler, was then supposed to return this past October against Hendricks in a title eliminator, but the former champ’s weight cut was bad enough he needed to be hospitalized, and the fight with Woodley was canceled.

Tyron Woodley vs. Robbie Lawler

Lawler (27-10, 1 NC) has won his last five fights in a row. He has successfully defended the 170-pound title twice, most recently against Carlos Condit in January at UFC 195. That five-round fight is considered by many pundits as one of the very best fights of 2016.

Woodley (15-3) has won two fights in a row and four of his last five. He hasn’t fought since a Jan. 2015 win over Kelvin Gastelum because he was scheduled to meet Johny Hendricks at UFC 192 in October, however, Hendricks failed to make weight and pulled out of the fight the day before the event.

Reigning champion Robbie Lawler (27-10 MMA, 12-4 UFC) will meet challenger Tyron Woodley (15-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC), officials today announced. The bout had been in the works.
